Returning the car was very easy. There's no need to go to the counter; just follow the signs for 'rental car return' and drive to the Alamo location. Someone will wave you down to stop. They only check if the gas tank is full, then let you take their shuttle bus to the airport.
The staff were enthusiastic and approved the temporary change of the main driver, which was excellent.
