Comparing makes a difference. The car I rented from European last time was handled very efficiently, and both pick-up and drop-off were super convenient. However, with Avis, the guy at the counter was on the phone for a long time before finally assisting us, and then it took ages with the paperwork. Returning the car was a big hassle too at the airport. We got lost, ended up in a paid parking lot and lost 40 NOK, all while rushing to catch a flight! The Avis office is very small and difficult to find, and even an Avis employee's sister, who is a taxi driver, couldn't help us locate it. Avis was very irresponsible in this regard.
The service was quite good. Avis and Budget share the same counter, and the queue was shorter compared to Sixt and Hertz. There were no extra upsells for additional insurance. I booked a Toyota Yaris but received a Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid with all-wheel drive. An Autopass was included, which worked for highways and ferries in Norway. At the end, highway fees were deducted from the card. When returning the car, gasoline cars need a full tank, and electric cars require at least 70% charge. Our RAV4 hybrid had no charge when we picked it up, so we just drove it as a gasoline car.
Although Stavanger Airport is not very large, all the car rental offices are located in a small building about 50 meters outside the airport, which is fairly easy to find. When I arrived, there was no queue at the AVIS window. I handed over my rental voucher, driver's license, QEEQ certificate, and credit card to the staff, and the process was completed in just a few minutes. The staff repeatedly confirmed my rights and obligations, had me sign in four places, and then handed me the car key. All the rental cars are located on the top floor of a five-story parking garage next to the rental office. Taking the elevator up, it was not too difficult to find the car assigned to me, a nearly new Golf Estate with only 6000 kilometers driven. I requested a diesel car, but the staff said none were available, so I got a gasoline car instead. Over ten days, it was quite fuel-efficient. The car had automatic headlights, automatic wipers, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, a massaging driver's seat, and automatic start-stop for the engine. All the necessary features were included, which was excellent. The downside was that due to the small engine, the power loss was quite noticeable when the air conditioning was on, and in some cases, I had to downshift two gears to drive normally.
In addition to credit and debit cards, you can now pay for online car rentals with cryptocurrency! Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) are accepted. Curious about how long a Bitcoin transaction takes or how to pay with Bitcoin? Read our FAQs for more details.
