I accidentally used the wrong card for the advance check in and the staff was kind enough to cancel it and allow me to use the card I had intended to use.
Picked up the car at the AVIS counter in INVERNESS. They insisted that in addition to the Chinese mainland driver's license and its translation, an international driver's permit was also required. Despite lengthy discussions, they wouldn't release the car, citing it as their policy. Called the Zuzuche customer service, who communicated with the staff, but the result was the same. The company hadn't notified them that a Chinese driver's license with a translation was sufficient. Anyway, I can't really blame the AVIS staff; they were just following the rules. They did agree promptly to note the reason for the refusal on my rental order. Thankfully, Zuzuche customer service quickly arranged a car with HERTZ, and I was able to pick it up without issues. Otherwise, I would have been totally stuck.
Everything was fine. But a hidden extra cost emerged at the time of pick up. This concerns only this particular Avis branch office. It turned out this office is inside the London Congestion Charge Zone, which added UKP 25 to the cost of hire. It would have been good if at the time of booking a warning message came up to indicate this extra cost.
