When picking up the car, the counter staff told me that the vehicle had no damage or scratches, and any scratch smaller than 2.5 cm would not be recorded. I only checked the body at pick-up and did not pay attention to the wheels and tires. Upon return, the staff claimed there were scratches on the front right wheel and demanded compensation without measuring, simply taking a photo and charging 350 Swiss Francs for repair plus 90 Swiss Francs for labor. I refused to sign, but was told the charge would proceed regardless. I'm disputing this with Hertz customer service. 1. The pick-up staff's guidance was insufficient and potentially misleading regarding scratches under 2.5 cm. 2. The return staff did not measure the length and insisted on the charge. Their latest response is to measure and photograph after the next rental. How can I be sure the damage wasn't caused by the next renter? 3. I cannot ascertain if the damage was pre-existing or caused during my rental. 4. Hertz did not provide specific scratch definitions or compensation terms. There is no official documentation clarifying whether this scratch requires compensation or detailing the cost.
It's hard to rate. I had a lot of luggage, so I specifically rented a Peugeot 3008. Upon arrival, I was told they provided a similar model, a small BMW. The trunk was extremely small. I requested a larger trunk but was told there was no car of the same size available, and I had to pay extra. I ended up paying 150 francs more for a Honda, which was quite disheartening.
We arrived early to try picking up the car. Initially, they told us there were no cars available and asked us to come back at the scheduled time. Later, they informed us that a car was available, and we managed to get it about an hour early. The return time remained the same as in the original booking. We found out later that this extra hour was crucial; otherwise, we would have been charged for an entire extra day! Also, the booked model was not available, so they upgraded us to a different, brand new car with a navigation system.
