I arrived at Thrifty around 9pm on Friday and didn't receive my vehicle until after 2 am Saturday morning. I had booked a pickup due to all the large luggage we would be returning with but received a Ford Explorer instead. I will have to return to California to pickup more luggage we had to leave behind as a result of not getting the pickup we had booked. The staff did not provide any details on why it took so long other than to tell us they were operating with a skeleton crew. On a busy Friday night??!! Further when we called to ask if we could swap out the Ford Explorer we were told there was one in Santa Barbara, 60 miles from our location but as it turned out, that Thrifty location no longer existed.
This experience was very frustrating!
1. I specifically requested the same model as last year, as I rented a Corolla from this company before. However, they insisted on giving me a Kia instead.
2. Last year, there were no upselling attempts, but this time they sneakily added a roadside assistance service during our conversation and charged me an extra $60+. I only noticed it because I got a notification from my credit card's WeChat service. When I told them I already bought full insurance, they said this service was unrelated to the insurance and that the charge was non-refundable since it had already been processed. Seriously...
3. The car they gave me kept showing a low tire pressure warning for the front left tire. I called someone to check, and they said it was only slightly lower than the other tires and that the warning would go away after driving. But throughout the entire six-day rental period, the alert never disappeared. While it wasn’t a slow leak—it was just 0.5 psi lower than the other tires—it made me constantly anxious during my trip.
I travel to the U.S. 2-3 times a year and rent a car every time, but this was the worst experience I've had so far. I don’t think I’ll choose Thrifty again in the future.
